To Know A Mountain

The film ‘To Know A Mountain’ follows an all-women expedition to Braeriach in the Cairngorms. This journey was inspired by Nan Shepherd’s book ‘The Living Mountain’, and depicts an anti-summit story, promoting inclusion in the outdoors, and representing a diversity of ways of being in the mountains not often told in adventure films.

I was commissioned to design and print the promotional poster for the film, using linocut printmaking techniques. The film focuses on viewing the mountain as a holistic ecosystem, and so I centred the design on the topography of the area using contour data and locations featured in the film. All of the flora species depicted around the edge of the poster are found growing in this region of the Cairngorms.

The film premiered at Kendal Mountain Festival in 2024. Throughout 2025 it was screened around the UK in Alpkit stores. The film alongside a written account of the expedition was published in Sidetrack Volume 33 magazine and online field journal.
